Hatteras Island Meals Raffle Breaks Records in 2024

Hatteras Island Meals’ (HIM) annual raffle is off to an impressive start in 2024, with prizes rolling in from numerous local businesses.

This year is shaping up to be one of the most successful yet, thanks to the continuous influx of donations.

Organizers are still tallying the exact number of prize packages as more contributions pour in daily. They are optimistic that this year’s event could set a new record. “We are still in the process of collecting gift cards,” said Cathy Diemer, Avon Community Manager for Hatteras Island Meals. “It’s been amazing once again to see the island come together to help. We are on track to serve 12,000 meals this year!”

Hatteras Island Meals, an all-volunteer organization, has been providing nutritious meals to elderly and homebound residents since 1987. The nonprofit, which started as a small community effort, now serves clients from Rodanthe to Hatteras Village. About 60 volunteers pick up meals from local distributors like Marilyn’s Deli, Waves Market & Deli, Diamond Shoals Restaurant, and Sonny’s. These volunteers then deliver the meals along their assigned routes multiple days per week, offering both food and companionship to those in need.

Fundraising initiatives like the annual raffle are crucial to HIM’s operations. Raffle tickets are currently available at Ace Hardware in Avon on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Starting September 1, tickets will also be sold at Conner’s Supermarket in Buxton and on Friday nights at Gingerbread House Bakery and Pizza in Frisco. Additionally, tickets will be available at the Day at the Docks festival on September 14.

Tickets are priced at $10 each or 4 for $35. The official raffle drawing will take place on October 12. For updates on prize packages and new donations, visit Hatteras Island Meals’ Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HatterasIslandMeals.
