Public Input Sought for Outer Banks Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

The Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan update is underway. Dare County and Currituck County, along with their incorporated communities, are seeking public input on changes in risks and vulnerabilities and new mitigation opportunities.

Importance of the Plan Update

This update is essential for all communities to maintain eligibility for FEMA’s pre- and post-disaster mitigation funding. It will help local communities understand their vulnerabilities and develop proactive mitigation strategies to protect people and property from natural and human-caused hazards.

Public Meetings

Community members are invited to attend public meetings to learn about the planning process and provide feedback on hazards, risks, and mitigation opportunities.

Dare County Public Meeting:

  • Date: Wednesday, August 7
  • Time: 5 p.m.
  • Location: Avon Volunteer Fire Department, 40159 Harbor Road, Avon, NC

Currituck County Public Meeting:

  • Date: Thursday, August 8
  • Time: 11 a.m.
  • Location: Corolla Public Library, 1123 Ocean Trail, Corolla, NC

Online Survey

For those unable to attend the meetings, an online survey is available. This survey allows community members to share their opinions and participate in the mitigation planning process. The information gathered will help identify local hazard risks and problems, leading to effective mitigation activities.
