Cape Hatteras National Seashore has reopened about 0.7 miles of beach in Rodanthe Village following a two-day debris cleanup from a house collapse on March 28.

The remaining closure, about 0.25 miles, extends from S. Holiday Boulevard to the north end of Ocean Drive in Rodanthe.

On May 28, an unoccupied house at 24131 Ocean Drive collapsed. Over the past two days, Seashore employees, volunteers, and a debris removal contractor cleared large amounts of debris across northern Rodanthe beaches.

“By deploying a large group of employees soon after the house collapse, the Seashore hopes that this particular house collapse creates fewer long-term impacts to the beach than collapses in prior years,” said Seashore officials.

Visitors are advised to wear hard-soled shoes and remain cautious on the beach and in the water near Rodanthe, as debris continues to wash ashore. Wind, currents, and waves have spread debris along a 15-mile stretch from the Richard Etheridge Bridge to off-road vehicle ramp 27.

The Seashore plans to use heavy equipment to rake up smaller debris north of the collapse site. Officials will decide on lifting the remaining closure in the coming days.
