U.S. Route 64 To Undergo Safety Revision
The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has unveiled plans aimed at improving traffic safety along U.S. Route 64.
Starting March 19, the speed limit on the Virginia Dare Bridge will be reduced from 60 mph to 55 mph. Additionally, the existing 40 mph zone within the Manns Harbor business district will be extended by 1/10 mile each direction.
As part of preparations for the summer tourist season, NCDOT will install portable message boards on each side of the 40 mph zone.
NCDOT’s Highway Division 1 Engineer, Win Bridgers, reports, “We conducted a comprehensive accident analysis and speed limit study along this corridor. We believe these measures, in conjunction with heightened enforcement, will deter speeding and significantly enhance safety in the area.”
To bolster visibility for cross traffic, NCDOT crews have cleared trees and shrubs along the highway. They will continue to monitor and maintain the foliage throughout the year.
