Internet Outage Hits Eastern North Carolina and Outer Banks on Friday

Eastern North Carolina and the Outer Banks faced a significant disruption internet outage affecting Brightspeed and Lumen users on Friday.

Lasting over four hours, the outage was attributed to a routine infrastructure update gone wrong, according to a statement from Brightspeed.

The internet outage, which began around 10:15 a.m., impacted DSL and fiber services for both residential and commercial accounts. Locally, users on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, including Verizon and Brightspeed customers, reported ongoing connectivity issues throughout the day.

While most residential customers experienced only short-term outages, businesses remained offline until at least around 2 p.m. 911 centers were significantly affected. School and local government phone systems were significantly disrupted. Numerous pharmacies were unable to process prescriptions due to the loss of internet service.

Brightspeed promptly responded to the situation, dispatching crews to resolve the issue. “We identified the issue immediately and dispatched crews to resolve it,” said a statement by Brightspeed. “We restored service, and all customers are back online.”

  1. My mom lives in Craven Co and has Brightspeed phone service (non service) it has been inoperable going on 4 weeks with no word on restoral. She is 89 and needs a phone. The is no one to speak with at Brightspeed bc when I call the number, it’s automated. The only option I can select that makes sense is, “send me a text when there is an update on the repair” There has been no text received. What is going on in Craven County, what is going on with Brightspeed? BTW- The original service call we placed several weeks ago was canceled by Brightspeed bc they advised there was an outage.
