Above-average temperature and precipitation in eastern parts of North Carolina are expected this winter, the National Weather Service has announced.

The change in such weather conditions are being attributed to the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation.

“While an El Nino can give us a good hint at what may happen, week-to-week differences in the weather are still quite variable,” said Erik Heden, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at National Weather Service office, Newport.

“Just like we say during hurricane season, it only takes one storm,” Heden remarked. “Our winter may end up mild, but if we see one snow or ice event, we will remember it.”
