Severe Coastal Storm Shuts Down N.C. Highway 12

Rodanthe, N.C. – Severe ocean overwash from a coastal storm forced the closure of N.C. Highway 12 between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe early Friday morning.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the closure at 7:00 a.m.

Additional overwash has impacted northern Buxton, Ocracoke Island, and side streets in northern Rodanthe. Authorities advise against travel in these areas, with northern Ocracoke Island experiencing particularly severe overwash.

All Ocracoke Island ferry services have been suspended until further notice.

Property Damage and Road Conditions

At least one oceanfront home in Rodanthe has collapsed due to the storm, according to multiple reports. Further details about the incident are expected soon.

Residents and visitors should anticipate continued flooding and hazardous conditions throughout the weekend, especially on southern Hatteras Island and Ocracoke.

Dare County Costal Storm Warnings, Preparedness

Drew Pearson, Dare County Emergency Management Director, emphasized the importance of precautionary measures. “With strong northerly winds gusting to 50-70 mph expected, move vehicles to higher ground and get stuff up off the ground. Better safe than wet,” he advised.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City predicts 2-4 feet of inundation above ground level in affected areas. They warn of rapid water level rises on the soundside of Ocracoke and southern Hatteras Islands as strong north winds intensify.
