NCDOT Reinstates Speed Limits on N.C. 12 on Monday

The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin reinstalling off-season speed limit signs along N.C. 12 in Currituck and Dare counties on September 16.

Starting Monday, speed limits through the tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, as well as in Corolla and Frisco, will increase to 45 mph, up from the seasonal limit of 35 mph. Additionally, off-season speed limits will be reinstated in areas of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, such as near the Haulover Parking Lot south of Avon.

Despite the higher speed limits, drivers are urged to remain cautious. Many motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians continue to be active on the Outer Banks during the fall season.

The seasonal 35 mph speed limits will return on May 15, 2025.
