NC Election Boards Begin Reprinting Ballots After Court Ruling

North Carolina county boards of elections are reprinting ballots for the 2024 general election, following a state court ruling.

The N.C. Supreme Court’s 4–3 decision on Monday requires the removal of the We The People Party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates from the ballot, including presidential nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and vice-presidential nominee Nicole Shanahan.

Election officials had planned to send ballots last week, as required by state law. However, they must now revise them due to the recent court decision.

Once officials revise the ballots, they will print and promptly send them to absentee voters. They expect this process to take place within the next few weeks. While the exact date is still uncertain, all counties will send out ballots simultaneously to ensure equal voting time across the state.

This reprinting process may affect the federal deadline of Sept. 21, which requires ballots for military and overseas voters to be distributed 45 days before the election. The State Board of Elections is working with the U.S. Department of Defense to possibly secure a waiver if this deadline is missed.

So far, 146,603 voters, including 12,900 military and overseas voters, have requested absentee ballots. The board is asking counties to securely store all ballots printed with the We The People Party line to prevent errors.

Key Dates for the 2024 General Election:

  • Oct. 11: Voter registration deadline (5 p.m.).
  • Oct. 17: Early voting begins; same-day registration available.
  • Oct. 29: Absentee ballot request deadline (5 p.m.).
  • Nov. 2: Early voting ends (3 p.m.).
  • Nov. 5: General Election Day. Absentee ballots return by 7:30 p.m.

Military and overseas voters have different registration and absentee deadlines. For more information, visit the NCSBE website.
