The Dare County Waterways Commission convened a meeting to address concerns about the conditions of Hatteras Inlet and potential dredging projects.

While Hatteras Inlet currently enjoys stability, members remain vigilant.

During the meeting, Joen Petersen, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chief of Floating Plant, expressed satisfaction with the current conditions of Sloop Channel. However, commission chair Steve “Creature” Coulter inquired about the possibility of widening the channel.

Ernie Dossier, representing the Ocracoke Waterways Commission, echoed concerns about channel size limitations. Both expressed a desire for larger channels to accommodate vessels more effectively.

The Corps recently conducted emergency dredging in Sloop Channel, addressing concerns raised by ferry operators and local fishermen. Plans for a wider channel are under consideration.

Ken Willson, Dare County dredge projects consultant, outlined plans for channel modification permits. The permits would enable the Miss Katie dredge to work more effectively in Hatteras Inlet and surrounding areas.

Discussions also included confusion regarding channel names and funding allocations for dredging projects. Despite challenges, the commission remains committed to maintaining navigable waterways for residents and visitors.

The commission unanimously voted to retain funds for future projects rather than proceeding with additional dredging at this time. Additionally, all current board members have committed to another two-year term.
