Cape Point Campground Reopens for 2024 After Flooding Delays
The Cape Point Campground in Buxton officially opened for the 2024 season on April 27, after a delay due to excessive flooding, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS).
The opening had been postponed because of record rainfall in March. The delay was caused by 13.86 inches of rain in March, making it the wettest March on record for Cape Hatteras, where the average rainfall for the month is 4.43 inches.
According to CHNS, “The Cape Point Campground will open loops D, E, and F at 3:00 p.m. today.” The restrooms on loop D and the showers on loop F will also open. However, other areas will remain closed due to continued flooding in low-lying sections.
The Frisco Campground, also part of CHNS, opened earlier on March 30. Both Frisco and Cape Point Campgrounds will remain open until after Thanksgiving. Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke campgrounds, however, are open year-round.
Reservations and campsite payments for all CHNS campgrounds can be made online at recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.
