RWS Civic Association’s annual meeting analyzes successes and plans next year’s events

At this year’s Annual Meeting, members and guests of the Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo Civic Association were treated to a retrospective on the group’s previous successes and an outlook on its future plans. The Rodanthe Community Center played host to a party and gathering for more than 30 people before the main event.

Some accomplishments from the last 12 months are:

  • Held the first outdoor Christmas tree lighting and Santa Claus visit. Over one hundred revellers and volunteers made their way out to the event.
  • The First Annual Rodanthe Run was successfully planned and executed on April 9, 2022. The new Rodanthe Bridge (also known as the “Jug Handle”) was the setting for a difficult 5 miler/5K walk/run. More than five hundred and fifty people, including athletes, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators, attended the event. More than $10,000 was raised for the Association at the event.
  • Seven students from Tri-Village were granted scholarships for the next school year.

Many Little Libraries have been set up around the Tri-Villages. Including those on Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, there are currently nine such libraries, with two devoted specifically to children’s literature.

The Association used the money it made to pay for the aforementioned and maintain the roughly 5 miles of paths so that people could safely walk, run, and ride bikes along them from Mirlo Beach to Salvo Day Beach without encountering any obstacles.

As an added bonus, the Association has released the Tri-Villages Business Map for the second year in a row, showcasing the local business support of our Villages. John Havel, a graphic designer and an expert on the Hatteras Lighthouse, was honoured for his work on behalf of the organization.

The plan for the following year is to have more activities throughout the year for the benefit of both locals and tourists.

The newly elected officials and directors of the association are introduced to the membership.

Tom Amatucci was chosen president, Jason Walsh was elected vice president, Mark Strausbaugh was elected treasurer, and Shannon Killham was elected secretary. The current Board of Directors is comprised of Aida Havel, Mary Helen Goodloe-Murphy, and Gene Stoel, and they were joined by the newly elected Directors Sabrina Hatfield, Chandra Rutledge, and Bryan Leaveall.

After Joanne Mason’s fantastic 24 years of service to the RWS Civic Association, Wayne Codding took over as Membership Chairman and Amberly Dyer joined to take over as Scholarship Chair.

Everyone living in Rodanthe, Waves, or Salvo is welcome to join. Visit www.rwscivicassociation.org or the RWS Facebook page to renew or join the association.
